I grew up amongst furniture, and I’ve never left it. Here in Mayfair, a sofa is never just a sofa. Couples step through the door, and they’re looking for furniture that will outlast them. A battered old wingback, gives them that. There was a velvet sofa that went to a townhouse in Chelsea, and it carried his family through generations. That’s the point with retro. They waste time with flat-pack, but at the end they admit.

Modern things break, whereas retro lives on. Every part of London tells a different story. Chelsea wants polish, with plush sofas. Hackney raw, with funky fabrics. That’s London. I’ll tell you something else, a sofa becomes family. Flat-pack won’t do that. I still knock on the wood for buy armchairs weight, and I know straight away. Retro has power. Before you make a mistake, step back. Find yourself a vintage sofa, and watch it age gracefully.
